Abstract: Wireless mesh network (WMN) is an effective means to provide internet services at cheaper cost. Authentication and key management is a challenging issue in WMN due to the wireless media, multi-hop communication and dynamic environment. On the other hand, neither the pre-shared key nor the IEEE 802.1x based authentication mechanisms are suitable for WMN. This paper proposes an effective authentication mechanism named WAKE, to provide access control for mesh clients. WAKE uses identity based cryptography and is non trivially secure.
